Identifying Common Golf Equipment
Golf equipment can seem a little confusing to the beginner, or one who is unfamiliar with the game. There are various different types of clubs, balls, apparel and other accessories. With an overview of the game and all its paraphernalia, it will become easy to start identifying all the accouterments of golf equipment.
The clubs are perhaps the most important items of golf equipment.
These are the implements used to strike the ball in the hopes of aiming it at the hole. There are a few different types of clubs, and they can all be found in the typical golfer's collection. These include putters, irons, wedges, woods, and occasionally hybrid and utility types.
The putter is perhaps the most often used club in golf equipment. These clubs are designed to be used on the putting green, where the turf is cut extremely short and smooth. Choosing one is a personal experience, and there is a wide variety of options available. Putters are made in three different styles and lengths. The three types of clubheads are a traditional blade, a mallet, and heel-toe.
The irons, named for their base material, have thin clubheads. They were actually made of iron for many years, though today they are crafted from steel. Beginner players usually choose the cavity-back style of clubhead, which, as the name indicates, means that the back of the clubhead is scooped. Irons are classified by numbers one through nine, which can be helpful in indicating the best choices for beginners to use.
Wedges are essentially still irons, but since they are a bit different, they are categorized separately.
There are sand wedges, for conveniently making shots from sand traps, lob wedges, for executing high shots, and gap wedges, which come in between sand wedges and lob wedges. There are also pitching wedges, though the previous three wedges usually comprise a set. These are often termed scoring clubs, since their purpose is accuracy within short range shots. Beginners need not be too concerned about anything other than a pitching wedge. The others are best suited for players who have gained more experience.
The typical bag of golf equipment will contain three woods, usually a driver and two fairway woods. These clubs now feature heads crafted from steel or titanium, though before the 1980s, they were indeed fashioned from wood. Beginners are usually encouraged to use fairway woods rather than the driver on the fairway.
The regulation-conformed balls are normally white, though other colors are also allowed. Their entire surface is covered with indentations that decrease turbulence in the air around the ball when it is in motion. This allows the ball to be hit farther. Shoes are another very important item of golf equipment. They feature spikes on the soles, either metal or plastic, which can help shot accuracy by providing good traction.
Now that all of the golf equipment can be easily identified, it will be easy to get started. This sport of leisure can be learned quickly, and mastered slowly. With the right golf equipment, it is easy to get ahead in the game.
